Ho Chi Minh City, April 25, 2008 – Today, Water and Environment Joint Stock Company (WACO) joined hands with Kenh Dong Water Supply Joint Stock Company to organize a groundbreaking ceremony to start work on the Tender Package No. 2 “Construction of Kenh Dong Water Treatment Plant and installation of D1200 mm pipeline” under Kenh Dong Water Supply System Project in Thuong Hamlet, Tan Thong Hoi Commune, Cu Chi District, HCMC.

The tender package, worth totally nearly VND216 billion, was awarded to WACO as its major procurement and construction contractor. Upon completion, Kenh Dong Water Treatment Plant will have a capacity of 200,000 m3/day. Main construction items include a raw water intake pumping station, a filter tank, a 20,000-m3 reinforced concrete reservoir, a treated water pumping station, a treatment system, a 13km-long D1200 mm pipeline. The project will be implemented for 16 months.

Raw water will be taken from Dau Tieng Lake in Tay Ninh Province through Kenh Dong Canal (Cu Chi) and treated at the plant. Once operative, the plant will provide clean water for such industrial parks as Tan Phu Trung, Duc Hoa (Long An), Xuyen A, Song Tan as well as residential areas in HCMC, helping resolve the long-lasting water shortage problem in the city. Kenh Dong Water Treatment Plant is among the key projects under the municipality’s water supply infrastructure investment and development strategy.

Pham Tra, General Director of WACO, said, “The 200,000-m3/day Kenh Dong Water Treatment Plant will see the application of a new water treatment technology – the DYNASAND self-cleaning filtration approach by Nordic Water Company from Sweden. This technology helps save energy and working space, thus reducing investment cost by around 15%. Besides this tender package, WACO won the project worth VND95 billion of developing a secondary network receiving treated water from Kenh Dong Water Treatment Plant, which is invested by SAWACO and will be implemented for six months.”
